Cornflowers
It has been an extremely rainy winter here in the Hawkes Bay, and the gardens are looking a bit swampy and soggy.
My original plan for the gardens was to have flowers all year round, and I am very pleased to say that I have achieved that so far.
At the moment I have beautiful blue cornflowers growing and flourishing. They are the most vivid blue, in all kinds of weather, even when it is very rainy and the rest of the garden looks washed out.
As well as being beautiful, cornflowers are also practical. Did you know that they have health benefits? Itβs true!
Cornflowers are used to make medicine, according to the website:
these medicines are used to treat fever, constipation, water retention, and chest congestion. It also helps to stimulate the liver, gall bladder, and helps with menstrual disorders.
Cornflowners are very easy to grow, either from seed or already in seedling form. They like well-drained soil, and lots of sun, and plenty of water. They grow prolifically, and deadheading them encourages them to produce more blooms
I have bushes of cornflowers growing in pallet gardens as a border, and I have also planted them in and amongst my cottage garden borders around my fence line. It is so lovely to see flowers at this time of year!
As always, please send us your favourite garden pics.
And happy gardening π€π§ββοΈπ»ππ©βπ³
